Inland Empire Resource Conservation District (IERCD) facilitated a teacher workshop funded in partnership with West Valley Water District (WVWD) on Tuesday, July 18th. Teachers from Rialto Unified School District and Colton Joint Unified School District were in attendance. The workshop focused on ideas for integration of water conservation content with general classroom instruction and consisted of three sections; water quality, water cycle, and facility tour.
Staff members Robin Glenney and Ernie Montelongo from WVWD led the water quality section in which the teachers were able to see the tools used in the field to test water and also talked about careers in water. Soil Scientist Peter Fahnestock of the Natural Resources Conservation Service presented a water cycle activity in relation to soil and infiltration using a rainfall simulator. The rainfall simulator was made of accessible materials so that the teachers could duplicate it in the classroom as a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) project. Following the presentations WVWD’s Chief Operator Sergio Granda led a tour to demonstrate the water treatment process.
Overall, the workshop was a great experience for everyone involved! Following the workshop WVWD Public Affairs Analyst Lauren Albrecht said, “it was great to work with you and your team yesterday at the Teacher Workshop! Looking forward to working at more events with IERCD in the future.”
IERCD will facilitate three more teacher workshops in the 2017-2018 school year. There will be one workshop within the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District (SBVMWD) service area and two workshops within the San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency service area. If you are a teacher interested in attending these workshops please contact Education Coordinator Jasmine Orozco at jorozco@iercd.org or (909) 283-7780.
