Santa Ana Watershed Community Science Network

On a warm summer day community members and staff from several environmentally focused agencies gathered together to share their knowledge in citizen science projects at the Santa Ana Watershed Community Science Network training. Citizen science involves the public in data collection and scientific research. The term “community science” was chosen to emphasize the collaboration between the people who live within the watershed and various agencies who strive to care for its natural resources.
The idea of a local watershed network began with Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District who then involved other agencies including Inland Empire Resource Conservation District, Chino Basin Water Conservation District, Inland Empire Waterkeepers, UCCE San Bernardino County Master Gardeners, and many others. During the training projects like trash counts using the Litterati app, water quality monitoring, best practices of iNaturalist and BioBlitz were demonstrated.
The Santa Ana Watershed includes lands surrounding the Santa Ana River and all of its tributaries. The Santa Ana River begins in the San Bernardino Mountains crosses through San Bernardino County, Riverside County, and central Orange County before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. The Santa Ana Watershed encompasses numerous cities with a myriad of communities including people, plants, and animals.
