Farm to Table

  1. Locally grown food is full of flavor, tastes and looks better. The crops are picked at their peak, and farmstead products like cheese and milk are hand-crafted for best flavor.

  2. Locally grown food is better for you. The shorter the time between the farm and your table, the less likely it is that nutrients will be lost. Food imported from far away is older and has traveled on trucks or planes, and sits in distribution centers before it gets to your store.

  3. Local food supports local families, the local economy and builds community. Local farmers who sell direct to consumers cut out the middleman and get full retail price for their food - which helps farm families stay on the land. When you buy direct from a farmer, you're engaging in a time-honored connection between eater and grower.

  4. Local growers can tell you how the food was grown. You can ask what practices they use to raise and harvest the crops. You will know where your food comes from, who grew it, and will promote a safer food supply.

  5. Locally grown food is an investment in the future. By supporting local farmers today, you are helping to ensure that there will be farms in your community tomorrow. Purchasing locally grown foods you help maintain farmland and green open space in your community. Eating local means more money stays within your community.

Two ways to support local food production include:

  • Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operated by individual growers and offering “shares” to residents interested in purchase a locally grown fresh food box. Find your CSA options at www.localharvest.org

  • Farms and Farmers Markets; Check your city’s local website to fine the closes farmers market in your area or visit one of these locations.
